Wall of Text Ahead. (On yourfaveisproblematic.tumblr.com)
So I seemed to have stumbled upon the “Your Fave Is Problematic” tumblr, and now I’m incredibly pissed off.
It’s a tumblr that focuses on finding every single possible flaw in every celebrity and posting it on the internet to call out their fans to say “Hey, this person you like and admire, they actually suck.”
Honestly, people who have literally no sense of humor and are unable to ever take the lightest joke are my least favorite people.
Sure, there are also people who aren’t joking, but who make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. Calm the fuck down.
When John Green said “Nerd girls are the worlds most under-utilized romantic resource” he wasn’t implying that women are a natural resource for men to use as they please. He was making a joke.
When he calls his brother Hank’s birthday “Hanko De Mayo” because it happens to fall on Cinco De Mayo, he is not meaning to demean cultures that celebrate that holiday. He is, again, making a joke.
When Tina Fey says she supports Autism Speaks, she may not know that it’s a problematic charity. What we know she means is that she supports autistic people and supports them, and that’s a good thing. When she says she’s going to “go crazy” she doesn’t mean to make fun of people who are clinically insane. It’s literally a figure of speech that is common in the modern day vernacular.
When Laci Green slipped up and used a transphobic slur, she got emails threatening her death, and mail in her mailbox at HOME that contained pictures of the apartment complex where she lived. She had to completely erase her internet presence for months before she felt comfortable going back online. Who is really at fault in this situation? Laci? Or her “fans”? It’s physically possible to explain to someone they’ve made a mistake gracefully without being a completely terrible person.
The list goes on and on. Honestly, I don’t know how people get through life hating everyone for every little mistake they make, or every little joke they say. It has to be an incredibly lonely and sad life.
